Asbestos Procedures

The Perdido Landfill is a Class I Landfill, permitted by the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation, and as such, is an acceptable site for the disposal of asbestos according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.

In order to comply with EPA, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations regarding the disposal of asbestos, the Perdido Landfill will not accept any asbestos for disposal unless the following criteria is met:

  • Asbestos must be adequately wetted to prevent any visible emission when handled.
  • The asbestos must be contained in clear (see-through) sealed plastic bags of six (6) mil minimum strength and thickness.
  • The bags must be clearly labeled with a warning which states:

CAUTION

CONTAINS ASBESTOS

AVOID OPENING OR BREAKING CONTAINER

BREATHING ASBESTOS IS HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH

  • The bags must not be damaged.
  • Acceptance Times:

    A.  Asbestos will be accepted Monday through Saturday between 2pm and 3pm.

    B.  Haulers are to provide a 24-hour notice prior to delivery or asbestos will not be accepted.

    C.  Prior to hauler off loading asbestos, landfill personnel will excavate an area at the working face large enough to accommodate asbestos load.

    D.  Landfill personnel to perform visual inspection of asbestos to determine if asbestos meets disposal criteria.

    E.  If asbestos load does not meet disposal criteria, landfill personnel will not accept asbestos load.

    F.  Landfill personnel should contact immediate supervisor and notify that load does not meet disposal criteria.

    G.  If load meets disposal criteria, hauler should be spotted at edge of excavation.

    H.  Hauler to off load asbestos into excavation.
