![]() Road PrisonOur county road prison is unique in Florida; it is the only county-operated work camp. As a work camp, we provide a large part of the manual labor work force for the Roads and Bridges Division, our neighbor in an 80-acre compound in Cantonment. Supervised by correctional officers, our work crews perform various tasks for the county such as clearing rights-of-way, grounds maintenance, drainage projects, and other aspects of road and stormwater maintenance. Our work force consists of inmates who are housed at our facility. They are supervised and guarded by certified corrections officers. Most of our inmates have been sentenced by the courts; however, approximately 28% are pre-trial detainees who have volunteered to work on county roads. As a road prison, we perform all the typical activities associated with incarceration of inmates including internal security, administration, food service, and building and grounds maintenance. Additionally, to minimize our food expenditures, we use inmate labor to grow our own vegetables on 16 acres of our compound. A catfish and tilapia farm have been constructed on sit to further reduce costs. Our goal is self-sufficiency! |
